Back on a full week spend at the temporary FabLab - a project called FabLab Squared - that happened at the Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie during Futur-En-Seine 2011.
People worked together all year long in order to set up Fab Lab Squared, which is a mini-fablab with a laser cutting machine, a RepRap and a milling machine (an a team of super cool "fab managers": Arthur from Nod-A, Julien from PING, Fabien from FINGSilicon Sentier), an exhibition (students from the school of design ENSCI shown their prototypes of Open Source products that you can make in a fablab), and a design contest called the Unlimited Design Contest. All week long, designers came at FabLab Squared to work on their projects.
The inauguration day was a big one, Jérôme was even able to give a TV B-Gone to Claudie Haigneré, president of the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie and former Minister. Turn off your TVs!
Hackable Devices team did its best to animate workshops (beginners and advanced level). During the week, more than 50 attendees were able to build their own electronics kits, learn basics of programmation and discover all kind of uses made possible by Open Source projects. We had a really great feedback. Thanks Guyzmo and John for sharing your enthusiasm!
On my side, I was glad to animate a three-hours brainstorming session about the "makers" community in France. Attendees shared their experiences and proposed great ideas. Hélène and Nathanaël from Silicon Sentier/La Cantine, Babozor (from La Grotte du Barbu), Corines who is working on a project regarding the makers community and that will be show in September, Inouk who is creating a hackerspace in Nancy, Kim co-founder of Kameleoon.com and Thibaut, belgian maker. Among other projects, we propose to launch a Maker Fest all over the country for one day and maybe the first French Maker Faire!
FabLab Squared was a great time to share ideas and experiences and gave us even more energy to go on! Hackable Devices is in fever and we are not ready to stop here.
